Early last year, (2007) Howard was contacted by scrimshander and author Jim Stevens, to participate to participate in a book project he was working on for Schiffer Publishing. This book, "Scrimshaw Techniques" was to be an instruction manual for the beginning and advanced student of scrimshaw. Howard submitted several pieces, and the book was published in early 2008.
Later on last year, he was again contacted by Jim Stevens to participate in a second book, as the publishers were very happy with the first book. This book was to be an advanced tutorial, on more advanced techniques of scrimshaw, including color. Howard submitted a piece for consideration, with photographs showing the work in several stages. The book was published in late spring, early summer of 2008 and Howard's piece made the cover of the book.
